When a dog or cat starts struggling — a back that gives out, legs that weaken, joints that ache — most owners ask the same question first: what is happening, and what can I do at home today? This library answers both. Each guide explains a common condition in plain language, the signs to watch for, and the everyday support products that genuinely help — the same ones we stock, and why.
Start with the condition closest to what you are seeing:

IVDD & Back Problems
Intervertebral disc disease (IVDD) is when the cushioning discs between the vertebrae bulge or burst, pressing on the spinal cord. It is most common in long-backed breeds like Dachshunds, Corgis and French Bulldogs, but any dog can be affected. The single most protective daily habit is removing jumping — every jump off a bed, couch or car seat loads the spine.
Signs to watch for: reluctance to jump or climb stairs, a hunched back, yelping when picked up, wobbly back legs, or dragging paws.
How LumiPaws helps: Ramps & Stairs replace jumping at the bed, couch and car; support harnesses take weight off the rear without pressure on the belly or back during toilet walks.

⚠ See a vet urgently if your dog suddenly cannot walk, drags both back legs, or cries out in pain — with IVDD, hours matter.

Hind-Leg Weakness & Paralysis
Weakness in the back legs can come from IVDD, degenerative myelopathy, injury, stroke-like events (FCE), or old age. Whatever the cause, keeping a dog mobile matters enormously: movement protects muscle, joints, digestion and mood. Dogs who cannot use their back legs at all often adapt remarkably well to a wheelchair — most take to it within days.
Signs to watch for: scuffed rear nails, knuckling (walking on the tops of the paws), swaying hips, difficulty standing, or legs that give way on smooth floors.
How LumiPaws helps: Wheelchairs & Mobility Carts restore independent movement; lift harnesses and slings help with stairs, cars and toilet breaks; drag bags protect paralyzed legs and skin indoors.

Arthritis & Joint Pain
Arthritis is the wearing down of joint cartilage, and it is extremely common — most senior dogs have it in at least one joint. It cannot be reversed, but its daily impact can be reduced a lot: supportive sleep, low-impact movement, and removing the jumps and slips that flare it up.
Signs to watch for: stiffness after rest that eases as the day goes on, lagging behind on walks, hesitating at stairs, licking at a joint, or irritability when touched.
How LumiPaws helps: Orthopedic Beds cushion pressure points through the night; ramps replace the highest-impact jumps; gentle, regular exercise matters more than occasional long hikes.

Hip Dysplasia
Hip dysplasia is a loose, poorly fitting hip joint that wears unevenly over time. It is most common in larger breeds (Labradors, German Shepherds, Golden Retrievers) and often shows up first as a young dog's "bunny hop" or an older dog's reluctance to rise. Weight control is the single biggest lever owners have.
Signs to watch for: bunny-hopping when running, difficulty rising from lying down, reluctance to climb, and loss of muscle over the hips.
How LumiPaws helps: Ramps & Stairs remove jarring climbs into cars and onto beds; orthopedic beds support the hips overnight; rear lift harnesses make standing and short walks easier on bad days.

Knee (ACL/CCL) Injuries
The cruciate ligament stabilises the knee. When it tears or stretches — common in active and overweight dogs — the knee becomes unstable and painful, and the other knee often follows. Some cases need surgery; many partial tears and post-surgery recoveries are managed with bracing, controlled movement and time.
Signs to watch for: sudden hind-leg lameness, "toe-touching" instead of full weight-bearing, sitting with the leg stuck out to the side, and a clicking knee.
How LumiPaws helps: knee braces and stabilising straps in Special Care & Accessories support the joint during recovery; slings control movement on lead walks; ramps prevent the jumps that re-injure healing knees.

Post-Surgery Recovery
The weeks after surgery — spay/neuter, orthopaedic, or spinal — decide how well a pet heals. The goals are simple: protect the wound from licking, keep movement controlled, and keep the pet calm and comfortable. Most recovery problems come from licking and over-activity, both of which are manageable at home.
Home recovery basics: block licking from day one, keep walks short and on-lead, use ramps instead of stairs and jumping, and follow your vet's recheck schedule.
How LumiPaws helps: recovery suits and anti-lick sleeves in Special Care are a comfortable alternative to the plastic cone; support slings help wobbly post-anaesthesia pets toilet safely.

Incontinence Care
Leaking urine is common in senior dogs, dogs with paralysis or spinal disease, and some females after spaying. It is a management issue, not a behaviour problem — and with washable protection, homes stay clean without isolating the dog from family life.
Practical tips: take your dog out last thing at night and first thing in the morning, protect bedding with washable layers, and check the skin regularly — urine scalds if it sits against the coat.
How LumiPaws helps: washable diapers, pants and belly bands in Incontinence Care — reusable, adjustable, and far cheaper over months than disposables.

Senior Dogs: Comfort & Daily Life
Old age is not a disease, but it does change what a dog needs: warmer, softer sleep; floors and routines that forgive slower legs; and outings that adapt when walks get shorter. Small changes at home make a large difference to a senior dog's confidence and comfort.
Signs your setup needs adjusting: slipping on hard floors, avoiding the car, restlessness at night, or giving up on favourite spots that need a jump.
How LumiPaws helps: orthopedic beds for joint-friendly sleep, ramps for beds and cars, and strollers so senior dogs still join family outings without the distance.

Blind & Low-Vision Dogs
Dogs lose vision gradually to cataracts, diabetes or old age — or suddenly, to glaucoma, retinal disease (SARDS) or injury. The good news owners are often surprised by: dogs adapt remarkably well, because smell and hearing were always their primary senses. What a blind or low-vision dog needs most is a predictable world and a way to feel obstacles before their nose and head find them the hard way.
Signs to watch for: bumping into furniture (especially after it is moved), hesitating at doorways, stairs or curbs, startling when approached silently, cloudy or enlarged eyes, and new anxiety in unfamiliar places.
Everyday habits that help: keep the furniture layout consistent; use scent markers (a different gentle scent at doorways and stair tops); put textured mats at the top and bottom of stairs; block stairs until your dog has mapped them; announce yourself before touching your dog; and keep food, water and bedding in exactly the same places.
How LumiPaws helps: a halo guide acts as a gentle bumper that touches walls and furniture before your dog does, turning collisions into information; calming wraps help with the anxiety that often follows vision loss; and soft protective collars shield healing eyes after surgery.
Products in this guide: Second-Generation Adjustable Blind Dog Halo & Anti-Collision Ring · Calming Anxiety Relief Vest with Hood – Thunder & Noise Solution · Inflatable Protective Dog & Cat Recovery Collar
⚠ See a vet promptly if vision loss is sudden, one or both eyes look cloudy, red, bulging or painful, or your dog is squinting or pawing at an eye — some causes (like glaucoma) are painful and time-sensitive, and a few are treatable.
Cats: Recovery & Senior Care
Cats hide pain well, so changes are easy to miss: a cat who stops jumping to favourite perches, grooms less, or sleeps in new low spots may be telling you their joints hurt. After surgery, cats also need lick protection — and most tolerate a soft recovery suit far better than a hard cone.
Signs to watch for: hesitating before jumps, missing the litter box edge, matted fur from reduced grooming, and hiding more than usual.
How LumiPaws helps: recovery suits and soft collars in Special Care, self-warming mats and supportive beds in Orthopedic Beds, and litter-access ramps in Ramps & Stairs. Our cat range is growing — every product is chosen for recovery and senior comfort, not novelty.
