Sizes are not standard between products — an XL harness is not an XL bed. The good news: you only need a soft measuring tape and two minutes. Measure your pet once, then match the numbers to the size chart on each product page. Every LumiPaws product page lists the exact measurements for each of its sizes.
The 4 measurements that cover almost everything
1. Weight — a bathroom scale works: weigh yourself holding your pet, then subtract your own weight.
2. Chest girth — around the widest part of the chest, just behind the front legs. Keep the tape snug, not tight. This is the main measurement for harnesses, vests and recovery suits.
3. Body length — from the base of the neck (where a collar sits) to the base of the tail, along the back. This is the main measurement for beds, drag bags and carriers.
4. Waist — around the belly just in front of the hind legs. This is the main measurement for diapers, pants and belly bands.
What to measure, by product type
Harnesses & mobility supports: chest girth first, weight second. For lift harnesses, if your dog is between sizes, choose the larger size — support matters more than a snug fit.
Wheelchairs & carts: weight, body length and leg height all matter. Follow our step-by-step guide: How to measure your dog for a wheelchair.
Beds & mats: measure your dog stretched out asleep, then choose a bed whose inner length is at least that long — most dogs need a few extra inches to curl and shift. Heavier dogs benefit from thicker orthopedic foam.
Diapers, pants & belly bands: waist circumference, measured snugly. Between sizes? Size up — a slightly loose band stays comfortable, a tight one gets chewed off.
Braces, sleeves & recovery collars: circumference of the leg, joint or neck exactly where the product sits — each product page shows where to measure for that item.
Ramps & stairs: these are sized to your furniture, not your dog. Measure the height of the bed, couch or car sill your pet needs to reach, and choose a ramp or step height that matches — the product page lists each model's height and incline.
Carriers, strollers & backpacks: your pet's body length and height (floor to top of shoulders, sitting) must be smaller than the carrier's inside dimensions, and your pet's weight must be under the stated capacity.
Cats
The same measurements apply. Most cat items (recovery suits, collars, beds) are chosen by weight and body length — both are listed on each product page.
